Digital Marketing University Lecture

David gave a guest lecture to students studying for a Masters Degree in Digital Marketing at Liverpool John Moores University.

His lecture was entitled “Marketing Mistakes they Make” and highlighted five of the biggest mistakes made by businesses in the realm of digital marketing, strategic marketing and marketing communications.

David began his lecture by saying that there are hundreds of mistakes made in marketing (including many he had made himself while marketing and growing his own businesses). For the lecture, he decided to focus on five mistakes that are often made in marketing, including digital marketing.

1. Falling in love with a particular medium
2. Focusing on winning the most difficult customers
3. Keeping their options open
4. Communicating features, not benefits
5. Making their businesses impersonal

He spoke about all of these, giving examples, and stated that the common element to all of these mistakes was a failure to look at things from the customer’s point of view.

David referred to several of the case studies in his marketing bookChase One Rabbit: Strategic Marketing for Business Success. 63 Tips, Techniques and Tales for Creative Entrepreneurs’. The book combines inspirational stories and practical techniques, inspiring entrepreneurs to make their businesses even more successful by using smart marketing that fits with their values and objectives. It is available as a paperback, audiobook and eBook from Amazon and other retailers.

“David’s talk about the importance of Strategic Marketing was inspiring and insightful.
He has a unique perspective from his distinguished career in marketing and company operations. David’s visit was on a Friday afternoon when we would usually have a tough time attracting students to hear a guest speaker, but that afternoon the room was full for David’s talk. We enjoyed his visit very much, especial his books ‘Chase One Rabbit’ and ‘T-Shirts and Suits’. Thank you again!”
